I Still Remember

Written for Thursday Tales

We used to walk in the snow through town, just the two of us. I barely recall the unbearable traffic and flashing headlights. The crowds that used to gather in front of shops and restaurants always seemed to disappear. Unnoticeable faces of time. The only memory that hasn’t faded are your warm hands wrapped tightly around my tiny fingers, grasping on for dear life.

Stretched across my bed, I begin to dance with memories. I’ll never forget the times you brushed my hair, helped me get ready for school. Your encouraging words still echo throughout the walls of this house.

Each recollection brings a smile to my face, yet tears roll down my cheeks, warming the cool of the day.

Making my way to the window, I glance over at the park across the street. One lone swing sways in the breeze. It’s amazing how peaceful things can be. At the same time, it’s astonishing how empty life can feel.

As I begin to lower my eyes, the snow begins to fall. Once again, I’m back in comforts arms. Each flake whispers your name. Each footstep I hear brings me back to those times when even silence was beautiful.

Wiping the tears, I can’t help but wonder if you’re still walking with me. Through town, through the snow filled streets. Are you hiding behind the headlights, lingering within the crowd?

Sometimes I can still feel your hands, wrapped tightly around my fingers. No longer tiny, I’m still grasping on for dear life. I still remember my mother’s love.
